Retro movies

People obssess over older movies of all the time,  and for me that includes all John Candy movies including the ones the critics didn't like and any and all Jim Carrey films along with anything with Bruce Campbell in it especially Evil Dead.

That's because retro movies have a certain charm to them, most if not all of John's best movies came out in the 80's, he did do a films in the early to late 70's as well. One of his last films Cool Runnings - came out in 1993 - a year before his death. Canadian Bacon and Wagon's East were both released posthumously - a word which here means it occurs after right someone's death - such as the case with those two movies.  Another example would be Heath Ledger getting an oscar nomination for the Dark Knight.

As for the Grinch, the book itself was written and published in 1957, the tv special aired in 1966 and the live action film starring Jim Carrey came out in 2000 (November 17th in the US, December 1st in the UK, 14th of December in New Zealand).

Also in case you were wondering how Jim got the part, well Audrey Geisel came onto the set of Man On The Man one day to see if he was right to play the part, Jim was so deep into the character of Andy Kaufman, however he had to essentially do an impersonation of himself during an impersonation of the Grinch. And that is what got him the part.

And for the record, i'm glad he played the character - no one else could have done it better, sure Nicholson was considered but at his age i don't think he would want to be covered in all that green dyed yak hair and prosthetic makeup like Jim.

Believe me that makeup process was torturous for Jim, the prosthetic makeup took over 3 hours to apply. He felt so uncomfortably confined in the latex skin that he needed councelling from an ex navy SEAL who taught him torture resistance techniques.

He had to wear full yellow schleral contact lenses which covered the entire eye, and they proved to be some uncomfortable that he was unable to wear at times during filming and it was required that shots of his eyes be coloured in digitally in post production.

I personally think that Jim made a great grinch,   he played the part perfectly  and i don't think anyone else couldn't have done it better than him.  Eddie Murphy and Jack Nicholson were both considered - but i really can't imagine either of them playing the character even though Jack has the smile for it.

What movies do you like which are from an older decade?
