Makeup magic

I love the makeup and special effects that goes into some horror, sci or fantasy movies. My favourite makeup artists are Rick Baker, Tom Savini and the late great Stan Winston.

I get this monthly magazine called Makeup Artist Magazine, it's a real top of the line magazine all about makeup in movies and tv shows and stuff like that. Other than me the only other people who have seen and read these are the makeup artists themselves.

The makeup for Michael Jackson's Ghosts was pretty damm awesome, especially the Mayor and Ghoul makeups (both for the Maestro AND the Mayor)

The mayor makeup was particuarly clever, you couldn't even tell it was really MJ under all that.

In fact on Agony Booth when they "reviewed" it they refered to the Mayor as Mayor Ebert because they thought he looked like film critic Roger Ebert (also possibly a nod to the fact there was a Mayor Ebert character in the 90's Godzilla movie, who coincidentally looked a lot like Roger Ebert).

And of course i do love The Grinch, it is one of my favourite Jim Carrey movies.

  1. Hi

I also grew up loving the magic of makeup effects. I grew up in a fantastic time when rubber ruled - watching The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and of course An American Werewolf in London. It was an amazing time and I feel very privilege to have been able to make a career out of what was a dream.

I actually went to the first ever makeup artists magazine trade show in Pasadena, 1997. The godfather of makeup effects Dick Smith was a guest speaker there and my mind was buzzing from all the activity and makeup effects 'celebrities'.

Dick had a line of people waiting to see his talk, and there was a point in the line where the maximum auditorium volume was. Dick came around to us and explained personally that they were not going to get in there, but there was another room next door which was hooked up to a camera and speakers.

After he passed by, everyone in the line started chatting to eachother - all complete strangers but amazingly they all just mingled as soon as their common hero walked past and spoke to them! Great memories.

    Kind regards
    Stuart
